BCCI confirm Ravi Shastri as new Team India Head coach
Former Team India director Ravi Shastri has been confirmed as the head coach of the Indian team until the 2019 World Cup. Meanwhile, pacer Zaheer Khan has been named bowling coach, while Rahul Dravid will be in the charge of batting consultant on overseas tours.
It was reported that Shastri was backed strongly by Indian skipper Virat Kohli and the current crop of players as such the new appointment has not come as a surprise. The former India all-rounder initially served as the team director from 2014 to 2016 and India also enjoyed a fair amount of success under him as India reached the semifinals of both the World Cup 2015 and also the World Twenty20 2016.
Last year, Shastri had also applied for the post but Anil Kumble was preferred over him and the latter was handed a one-year contract that ended after the 2017 Champions Trophy. But the legendary leg-spinner stepped down from the post ahead of India's tour of West Indies following his “untenable” relationship with Kohli.
Along with Shastri, former India opener Virender Sehwag, Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Tom Moody, former Pakistan coach Richard Pybus, and Afghanistan coach Lalchand Rajput was interviewed yesterday by CAC. The CAC asked by the CoA chief Vinod Rai to finalise and announce the name of the head coach today. Earlier, Ganguly stated that the committee would want to discuss the candidates with the Indian skipper.
Meanwhile, Zaheer Khan was appointed the team’s bowling consultant, while Rahul Dravid was named batting consultant for overseas Test tours. Recently, Dravid stepped down from his position as the Daredevils mentor after accepting a two-year contract to coach the India A and Under-19 teams. On the other hand, although, Zaheer does not have any formal coaching experience, he is known to have been a good mentor to younger bowlers when he led India’s attack. Last year, Zaheer was also offered the role of the bowling consultant by the BCCI, but the agreement couldn't be finalised due to remuneration issues.
"Zaheer is a contemporary cricketer who assumed the mentoring role to a young fast bowling unit even during his playing days with India. His inputs will be of immense value to our young fast bowlers, who have shown tremendous potential in the last couple of years,” said the Board of Control for Cricket in India in a statement.
“As the Indian team is to play Test cricket overseas in the next two years, Rahul Dravid’s expertise as batting consultant will be immensely helpful for youngsters.”
