Former India wicket-keeper, Deep Das Gupta, criticized the on-field umpire’s decision not to consult the third umpire in the IPL clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings. He also added that the third umpire’s involvement in matches should be increased more than what it is right now.

Ambati Rayudu’s blistering 79-run innings helped CSK reach a competitive total of 182 for 3 against SRH. In reply, it was only the skipper, Kane Williamson, who stood tall against the CSK bowling attack but failed to see the game through. In the post-match show with ESPN Crincinfo, Deep Das Gupta felt that Williamson didn’t have anyone supporting him in the run chase.

“Williamson didn’t have enough support. Rayudu played the same innings but had Raina with him for support,” said Deep Das Gupta.

Shaun Tait appreciated the innings from Kane Williamson and believed that despite their loss, SRH can take some positives from the match. With SRH firepower in their batting, he even suggested the inclusion of Alex Hales in the mix.

“Great innings from Williamson. SRH can take some positives from the match. Maybe put Hales in the mix,” said Shaun Tait.

Giving his insights on the match, James Faulkner termed Williamson’s innings as ‘sensational’. He felt that the turning point of the match was when Karn Sharma got hit for 3 sixes in an over. He pointed out that SRH would be upset about the no-ball that wasn’t given and they wouldn’t have gotten anywhere near to the target if it wasn’t for Williamson.

The ball in question was the second ball of the 17 over bowled by Shardul Thakur to Williamson. The New Zealander looked shocked by the decision of not giving it a no ball.

“Won’t get anywhere near to the target without Kane. After just 40 runs in powerplay, Kane played a sensational knock. Turning point of the match was when Williamson hit the leg spinner for 3 sixes in an over. It got them the momentum. Then, Yusuf came and showed the skill he got. But, Geez, SRH would be upset about the no ball,” said James Faulkner

Shaun Tait termed the decision from the umpire as ‘ordinary’. "In KXIP match, Andrew Tye’s first ball was given a no-ball, which didn’t look like one."

Deep Das Gupta was quick to point out the wrong decision of the umpire and said, “A no ball given which wasn’t a no ball. The Third umpire can tell the on field umpire that it wasn’t a no ball.”

James Faulkner felt that the rules of the game must be changed and the on-field umpire must be allowed to take help from the TV umpire. He also mentioned about the no ball decision on Tye’s bowling.

“I like the rules to be changed to take help from the umpire. Other day, AJ Tye’s first ball was given a no ball,” said James Faulkner

Shaun Tait even suggested that there must be ‘non-wicket referral’ too for teams. Deep Das Gupta believed that third umpired must have a major role in the decision making and should point out the wrong decisions of the on-field umpire.

“Involve third umpire more. Let umpires sort out the decisions among themselves. 50-50 chances are okay, but blatant no ball, third umpire should be involved,” added Deep Das Gupta
