IPL 2018 | I was grinning from boundary line looking at Deepak Chahar's first over with pace and bounce, reveals Lungi Ngidi
With full of praise for the Pune's surface, Lungi Ngidi revealed that he was grinning from boundary line looking at Deepak Chahar's first over with pace and bounce. The South African bowler observed that IPL experience has been an eye-opener for him, as far as his international career is concerned.
The trend of Indian pitches is such that fast bowlers usually suffer while bowling with pace and bounce, but the Chennai Super Kings speedster Lungi Ngidi was full of praise for the Pune surface where he wreaked havoc with his quality display of fast bowling and returned with figure of 4-1-10-4, during the final league match of IPL against Kings XI Punjab.
After helping the team win the match, the South African revealed that when he was fielding on the boundary line during the first over of Chahar, he was surprised and was exactly grinning looking at the pace and bounce that Chahar generated.
“Having seen (new ball partner Deepak) Chahar bowl the first over, there was a bit of bounce and pace in the wicket. I was grinning there from the boundary. When I got the ball and bowled
"I tried to pitch it on the fourth stump line, (thinking) whether it was swinging away or swinging back in, let the batsmen deal with that. It was a very good wicket for fast bowlers I'd say. It was very exciting to see Indian conditions offer such a fast bowler-friendly wicket," he added.
Ngidi left the Chennai camp and returned home last month after his father passed away but has been a compact performer with the ball for the two-time champions, since his return. On a pitch of his liking on Sunday, Ngidi dismissed the dangerous Chris Gayle for a duck in his maiden first over. In his next, he brought one inswinger to knock out the in-form KL Rahul. He then returned to dismiss Punjab captain Ravichandran Ashwin and Andrew Tye in one over on his way to register his best T20 figures, which also earned him the Man of the Match award.
"It was the last thing I expected. I never thought I'd get picked up in the auction. But the way the coaching staff and (captain) MS Dhoni have backed me has been really amazing,” said the 22 years old.
Bought for five million Indian rupees ($73,448) in the players’ auction, Lungi Ngidi reckoned that his maiden IPL experience has been an eye-opener as far as his international career is concerned and playing in front of such large crowds will test a player’s nerves like nothing else.
"The experience here has been eye-opening. I have never played in front of such crowds but then again this is the kind of stages where you find out how really good you are.”
