Graeme Smith is still under the contention for becoming South Africa's Director of Cricket
Cricket South Africa's (CSA) has been desperate for the last 4 months to engage South African great Graeme Smith with the work affairs. The former test captain cleared the air of confusion that built up during the last weekend regarding his appointment as director of cricket by CSA.
Smith was eager to take up the responsibility of the crisis-struck CSA with his shear credibility and vision for the game. However, his reservations regarding the freedom and support to revive cricketing facilities in South Africa made him rethink. Multiple reports had already announced Smith’s role as CSA’s Director of Cricket.
"Contrary to media reports I have not been appointed director of cricket by CSA. As previously advised I withdrew my application for the role. I am, however, in ongoing discussions with CSA, but I still have real concerns, which I have reiterated to them," Smith tweeted.
Following that, he wrote on social media that he had to “unfortunately withdrew” his interest for the role. It is learnt from Cricbuzz report that CSA’s president Chris Nenzani, has "begged" Smith to accept the position but Smith’s acceptance is hindered by the fact that Board’s chief executive Thabang Moroe has manipulated administratively appointments at various level of the organisation.
"I would love to have taken on the role. However, despite my obvious desire to make a difference during the long and, at times, frustrating process over the last 10 or so weeks of discussions, I have not developed the necessary confidence that I would be given the level of freedom and support to initiate the required changes.” he added.
With charges of corruption hitting the organisation real hard and cumulative financial losses with the different leagues in South Africa, it is of serious concern whether a man with most test victories as a captain is willing to take up this challenge or not.
