Farokh Engineer has declared that Delhi youngster Rishabh Pant must definitely be on board the plane to England come May 2019 as part of the Indian team heading to play the World Cup. Pant. still aged just 21, was included in the limited-overs team for the home series against Australia this month.

Pant has enjoyed a steady rise to stardom ever since his performances at the U-19 ODI World Cup a couple of years ago. Having caught the eye of selectors during the stint with Delhi Daredevils, now Delhi Capitals, Pant slowly rose through the ranks in the Indian team under the guidance of MS Dhoni and leadership of Virat Kohli.

Pant, who has represented India in nine Test matches and 13 T20I’s, was elected to play in limited-over series against Australia ahead of Tamil Nadu cricketer - Dinesh Karthik. Former India wicket-keeper, Farokh Engineer, welcomed the selection committee’s decision as he claims that Pant deserved a spot in the Indian squad.

“He (Pant) is a youngster who deserves every opportunity, he has the potential… We are in a very fortunate position to have Dhoni. At that age, he is very fit and he should definitely be in the team, who knows, Pant could even play as a batsman. He finished second average in Australia,” Engineer was quoted as saying in The Telegraph.

The decision to choose Pant over Karthik came as a surprise to many as Karthik was thought to be in the fray for a World Cup spot as a middle-order batsman. But despite Pant’s poor form in the 50-over format, Engineer mentioned that Pant could also serve as a specialist batsman in the batting line-up.

21-year old, Pant, made his ODI debut in the home series last year against the Windies. The left-handed batsman has scored just 41 runs in the three One-dayers for India. He will get a chance to prove his worth and seal a spot in the middle-order when Virat Kohli & Co. take on Australia later this month.
