VIDEO | “Autonomous” Tim Paine dictates his own way despite Cummins advising him against DRS, fails terribly

Tim Paine, in his short duration as the captain of Australia, has created a name for himself by being a very good reader of the game and situations. However, today was the deviation from the norm as he went against the advice of Pat Cummins, only to be left disappointed by the third umpire.

Once Paine steps onto the field, he projects himself as a concentrated individual and no matter whatever blows come his way, he never deviates from what is called as the zen-like composure. His astute captaincy in the Perth Test was down to the fact that he observed everything very closely and keenly, and never shied away from giving his bowlers full freedom. That was bold Tim Paine, termed as “temporary skipper” by some, but turning up for his job at the right time and making sure it was carried away with efficiency.

However, the ongoing SCG Test can’t claim to have seen a Paine who didn’t get carried away by his instinct and took decisions logically. On a pitch where bounce started becoming the order of the day from the very first over, he took a terrible decision of going for a review, despite Cummins saying, “No way.”

Cummins got the second delivery of the 15th over to nip back sharply to Cheteshwar Pujara and that found Pujara strangely unbalanced in his crease. As a result, the Indian No. 3 failed to get his bat down in time and the ball went in between his gloves and abdomen to find Paine’s gloves. Australians suddenly saw a glimpse of a caught behind dismissal and appealed in unison, but Cummins was not convinced about it and said “No Ways” almost instantly.

But Paine came forward towards the stumps and decided to go upstairs. The replays, however, belied Paine’s confidence as the RTS spike showed a flat line after a blurred and obscured vision on HotSpot. Australia lost their first review, just like that.
