Adil Rashid has stated that skipper Eoin Morgan always had faith in his abilities right from the outset. Throughout the tournament, Rashid has been struggling with a shoulder injury but that didn’t stop him from achieving success as he has done a reasonable job with his wily leg-spin.
Rashid has played a crucial role in England’s rise since the 2015 World Cup debacle. He has been one of the top wicket-takers since the last World Cup but has not been at his best in the ongoing tournament due to a shoulder niggle. However, his match-winning spell in the semi-final against Australia, where he registered three wickets for 54 runs, helped England win the game convincingly.
“It was nice to make a batsman go for a cut on the back foot and spin it back in. That’s a nice feeling for any spinner that bowls a variation that a batsman doesn’t pick and gets a wicket. I’ve probably not bowled them as much and the main reason was probably because I’ve got a bit of a shoulder problem,” said Rashid, reported AFP.
“Before the shoulder, I was confident bowling everything but once you have a niggle it becomes a bit harder with the rotation — the arm gets a bit lower and you don’t find that snap. But I knew that was a big weapon for me… I knew I still had to bowl it even if I was in a bit of pain. Now I can get it back to my best.”
Morgan has shown enough faith in Rashid’s abilities and has backed him through the ups and downs. The leggie also reckons Morgan as the best skipper he has played under and is of the opinion that he understands his game really well.
“Morgs always had the faith in me, from day one until now. There are going to be games where you don’t go well and games where you go well but he was confident in me. One hundred percent he’s the best captain I’ve played under. He knows my game now inside out and I’ve been with him for four years, through good times and not so good times,” Rashid added.
England are all set to lock horns with New Zealand in a World Cup final on Sunday and Rashid will look to inflict damage with the ball in hand.
