Much in contrast to the Ashes, the India-South Africa series, so far, has seen a very high level of umpiring. But in a bizarre moment, umpire Nigel Llong showcased his patience, took his time and finally ruled Senuran Muthusamy out, hilariously after India stopped appealing for the wicket.

The umpiring in this series has been a breath of fresh air, especially after the terrible Ashes which saw every alternate decision being overturned. Apart from the caught-behind decision of Anrich Nortje which was overturned before stumps on Day 2, the umpires have been spot on with their decisions and as a result, DRS has hardly been put to use. With Ravindra Jadeja aiming for the rough outside the left-hander’s off-stump, South Africa’s Senuran Muthusamy was dealing with it by padding the ball away, ensuring that he safely negated it without giving the left-armer a sniff.

On the second ball of the 43rd over, Jadeja bowled a similar delivery outside off-stump, to which Muthusamy shouldered arms. The Indians looked uninterested and after a brief shout, withdrew their appeal and had their hands on their head. But to everyone’s shock, umpire Nigel Llong, after a good five seconds, raised his finger and ruled the batsman out. The decision surprised everyone including the Indian team and a puzzled Muthusamy went for a review. But the review was of no avail, as hawk-eye showed three reds, meaning Muthusamy was a goner. He took his time, but an excellent decision from Llong indeed.

Here is how Twitter reacted to the incident:
