Resuming from an overnight score of 16/1, incumbent Indian batters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman GillĀ seemed to have shed the inhibition they showed late on Day 1 and patiently added 34 to their partnership to take the team score past 50. However, things quickly unravelled for the hosts thereafter, beginning with Gill misreading a Mitchell Santner delivery and being trapped plumb in front of the stumps. Virat Kohli missed the line of a low fulltoss Santner a couple overs later to end a brief stay of nine deliveries before Glenn 'golden arm' Philllips just took four balls to strike as Jaiswal edged one to slip and left India reeling at 70/4. By the time Lunch arrived, poor shot selection meant Sarfaraz Khan and Ravichandran Ashwin had also fallen victim to Santner while an ordinary shot from Rishabh Pant saw Phillips sound him the death knell, the scorecard reading 107/7 at the break.Ā 

Upon resumption, Ravindra Jadeja provided someĀ hope to the Men in Blue with a counterattacking 38 featuring three boundaries and two maximums, aided by a quick 18-run unbeaten cameo from Washington Sundar at the other end, but Santner inevitably returned to the mix by scalping three in nine deliveries and folding out India for 156, over a hundred runs short of their rivals' first innings total.

In response, Tom Latham and Devon Conway showcased great confidence toĀ rack up 19 in the first three overs, including three boundaries off Ashwin. However, the offie pair of him and Washington Sundar soon regained control and it culminated in Conway missing an attempted sweep to succumb LBW to Ashwin. Will Young was the next to fall at the stroke of Tea while Rachin Ravindra succumbed soon after resumptiion as the Kiwis were reduced to 89/3. Latham brought up his individual half-century in Daryl Mitchell's company who holed out after a breezy 18 before combining with namesake Tom Blundell for 60 crucial runs late in the day. Ultimately, LathamĀ missed a sweep and was given otu LBW 19 short of a century as the Kiwis closed out the day on 198/5.
