Red-ball cricket has long been heralded as a game of patience and grit, but the sport has a rich legacy of dashers and risk-takers carving their own niche in Tests. Yashasvi Jaiswal seems to be the latest entrant on the list, as he cemented in Leeds on Friday with a breathtaking showcase of intent.

‌India dominated the first two sessions of Day 1 in the first Test against England at Headingley with both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill registering their maiden half-centuries on English soil. While the latter scored his runs at nearly run-a-ball on the back of a driving masterclass, Jaiswal was not far behind either as he found the boundary frequently after Lunch. However, the opener was not content with the flow of runs still as Ben Stokes tried to stifle the duo with a short ball ploy, provoking the youngster into a daring act that could have gone down terribly.
With tongue haring down on back-of-length and short length, Jaiswal was exhausted of the onslaught by the time the 41st over came around. As Tongue returned to his mark to bowl the fifth ball of his set, Jaiswal loudly claimed to Gill, “Mai risk le lunga, yaha se jo hoga hoga...chalega mereko koi parvah nahi hai [I’ll take a risk now, whatever happens happens… yes it’s fine I don’t care].” The skipper at the other end seemed to suggest caution but the advise fell on deaf ears as just two deliveries later, Jaiswal stood tall in his crease and cut the ball for six, with deep square leg playing spectator.
The streak of fearless aggression quickly won the hearts of Twitterati.
