WATCH | Hus Ya Ching’s racquet-changing feat mid-rally leaves the commentator speechless

As exhilarating as it sounds, badminton is the only sport where a player can change racquets during an ongoing rally. Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Ya Ching left everyone in awe on Thursday, as she changed her racquet amidst a match-point rally against Danish duo of Juhl-Pederson during the second round.

Being the fastest sport in the world which sees the shuttle blazing past the court in tremendous speed, a shuttler is estimated to hit the cock 40-50 times in a matter of just 20 seconds. And to change one’s racquet amidst all of it is almost unthinkable.

However, Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Ya Ching pulled off the same on Thursday when she was playing alongside compatriot Wu Ti Jung in the women’s doubles second group stage game against Denmark’s Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Christina Pederson in the Dubai Superseries. After the first two games were shared equally and with the scoreboard reading 20-22 and 21-13, the decider was bound to be thrilling.

The incident happened during the final point of the third game when the Danish duo was leading 20-17, with Juhl serving for the match point. With Jung taking the frontcourt and the first shot from the serve, Pederson sent the cork to Ching at the backcourt with a flat shot. Ching then smashed it back just in front of Pederson, which required the Dane to lift it up to the opponent’s court that had height but no speed. It was then that Ching sent a lofted cross-court shot to Juhl and rushed to the sideline to change her racquet and come back while her partner dealt single-handedly with the opponents.

Executing this in badminton requires tremendous coordination between the players and in hindsight one could find the first two shots of Ching a brilliant attempt to find sufficient time for herself to get off the court and change the racquet.

Though they couldn’t hold off their opponent as the rally could extend only for two more shots before Juhl smashed one from the midcourt and the cork landed in between the Chinese Taipei shuttlers ending the game 21-17, Ching’s effort was lauded by one and all. It drew a loud cheer from the crowd and left the commentator in disbelief, who could be heard saying, “I cannot believe this!”
