Priyanka Panwar banned for 8 years for failing dope test

Priyanka Panwar, who won a gold medal in the 4x400m at the Asian Games, has tested positive for a banned performance enhancing drug for a second time which has forced National Anti Doping Agency to hand her an eight-year ban. Earlier, in 2011 she had found positive for an anabolic steroid.

The list of the players who are getting caught in the latest doping scandal is getting longer by the day with Priyanka Pawar as the new entrant. The Asian Games gold medallist, Panwar, was banned by NADA, for a period of eight years, after she tested positive for a performance enhancing drug. NADA conducted the test last year and have now announced the results.

"Priyanka's samples had tested positive for mephentermine (a stimulant). The disciplinary panel heard her case and banned her for a period of eight years," NADA sources told TOI.

According to sources, discus thrower Arjun, has also failed a dope test.

"His sample has tested positive for testosterone. The hearing is on in Arjun's case before the panel serves the verdict," the sources added.

This is the second time that Panwar has been found guilty of using the banned substance. According to the NADA code, athletes caught for a second anti-doping rule violation get a sanction ranging from eight-year to lifetime ban.

Panwar was one of the athletes who won the women’s 4x400m relay gold at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon. Along with Tintu Luka, Mandeep Kaur and MR Poovamma she created a new national record of 3:28.68s.

Panwar had also tested positive for anabolic steroids along with Ashwini Akkunji in tests conducted by NADA in Patiala six years ago. NADA is facing a high number of positive dope cases - the number stands above 40 so far this year - which is a backward step for athletics in the country.

"So far, approximately 40 sportspersons have been caught by NADA. Most of these players are from athletics, weightlifting, powerlifting and boxing," the sources added.
