Indian shuttlers Parupalli Kashyap, Sameer Verma, and HS Prannoy won in contrasting fashion to enter the quarter-finals of the US Open Grand Prix Gold yesterday. On the other hand, Harsheel Dani, Sri Krishna Priya Kudaravalli, and Rituparna Das lost their respective matches in the singles event.
Kashyap reached the quarterfinals after registering a win over Sri Lanka’s Niluka Karunaratne. The gold medalist of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games thrashed 16th seed Karunaratne in straight sets 21-19, 21-10. In the next round, he will face fifth seed, Sameer Verma.
Verma, who is coming back from a shoulder injury, faced stiff competition from Croatian’s Zvonimir Durkinjak in his first round. He defeated the Croatian player 21-19, 25-27, 21-15 and then overcame Brazil's Ygor Coelho 18-21 21-14 21-18 to set up the clash with Kashyap.
Even, Prannoy continued his winning momentum and brushed aside Ireland’s Joshua Magee 21-13, 21-17. In the next round, he registered a win against Netherland's Mark Caljouw 21-8, 14-21, 21-16. Prannoy will face eighth seed Kanta Tsuneyama of Japan in the quarterfinals.
However, other Indian players like Harsheel Dani, Sri Krishna Priya Kudaravalli, Rituparna Das failed to register wins and crashed out.
