Sundar, Khaleel star as India U-19 lift tri-series title
A fifty from Washington Sundar and Khaleel Ahmed’s three-wicket haul guided India to a five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka to clinch the U-19 tri-series one-day cricket tournament title in Colombo on Monday. After bundling out the hosts for 158 in 47.2 overs, India reached the target in 34 overs, losing five wickets in the process.

Opting to bat after winning the toss, Sri Lanka kept losing wickets at regular intervals as the Indian bowlers wrecked havoc. Left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed scalped three for 29, while Avesh Khan (2/24), Shubham Mavi (2/28) and Mayank Dagar (2/24) claimed two wickets each at the R Premadasa stadium in Colombo. Wicketkeeper batsman Vishad Randika was the lone bright spot in the Sri Lanka batting line-up as he made 58 off 75 balls to take the hosts to a respectable total.
Chasing a target of 159, India got off to a brilliant start with openers Washington Sundar and Rishabh Pant putting an 89-run partnership for the first wicket. After Pant’s departure, Ricky Bhui joined Sundar in the middle to take the Indian innings forward. Sundar followed his opening partner back to the dressing room shortly after bring up his fifty. With the victory in sight, Indian batsmen threw away their wickets to left-arm spinner Damitha Silva to start a minor collapse. However, Bhui along with Mahipal Lomror guided the team to victory without further ado.
This is the second tri-series victory for the Indian colts after lifting the home tri-series against Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Coached by Rahul Dravid, the junior team’s next assignment will be the 2016 ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup, which is slated to commence on January 22 in Bangladesh.
