Indian women’s hockey team started their South Korea tour on a positive note as Lalremsiami’s sole strike in the first quarter earned them a 1-0 win over the host nation. India are set to play their second match of the five-match series tomorrow as they look to take a 2-0 lead over the hosts.

India started the five-match series against South Korea with a gritty 1-0 victory in the first match of the tour. India’s Lalremsiami scored the only goal in the first quarter to hand the visitors an important victory to go 1 up in the series, reported NDTV sports.

India started the first match on the front foot. After enjoying more than 50% possession in Korea’s half, Lalremsiami scored for the visitors on the five-minute mark. Even after taking the lead, the Indian team did not sit back and posed threats with continuous attacks. India’s defence was able to negate any form of attack that the Koreans tried in the first quarter, as India had their lead intact by the end of the first quarter.

India were awarded two penalty corners in a span of three minutes in the second quarter but failed to capitalise on any of them as they were denied two superb saves made by Korea’s goalkeeper Mijin Han. With seven minutes left before the break, Korea were awarded their first penalty corner that they failed to convert.

Despite dominating the third quarter, the hosts failed to level the scores due to the stiff defence put up by the Indian team. Vandana Katariya and Monika were awarded green card that left even India with nine women on the field towards the end of the third quarter. However, India’s debutant goalkeeper Swati made crucial saves in the fourth quarter saving two penalty corners and also a penalty stroke to hand India their first victory in the tournament.

India will now face South Korea in the second match tomorrow scheduled to be played at the Jinchun National Athletic Centre in Korea.
