ISSF World Championships | Junior shooters clinch bronze, while seniors return empty handed

Indian Junior shooters Divyansh Singh Panwar and Shreya Agarwal managed to bag bronze medals at the ISSF World Championships, whereas the seniors had no such luck on the fourth day of the tournament. The duo of Panwar and Agarwal shot a combined 435 to finish third among 42 participating nations.

Divyansh Singh Panwar and Shreya Agarwal had accumulated a score of 834.4 in order to place themselves at the fifth position, which was the last position for qualification. India occupied the final position among the 42 other participating nations in the 10m air rifle mixed team junior event and eventually won the bronze by finishing third on Wednesday, September 5.

The gold medal was claimed by Italy's Sofia Benetti and Marco Suppini. Iran’s Sadeghian Armina and Mohammed Amir Nekounam were the ones to receive the silver medal. Further, a team of Elavenil Valarivan and Hriday Hazarika from India finished 13th in the same event with a score of 829.5.

So far, India have gathered three of each gold, silver and bronze medals at the tournament in Changwon, and are placed a joint third, behind Korea, Russia and China. However, the senior shooters have not been able to turn the tournament into a very successful campaign so far. With the Championship being the first quota securing event for the Tokyo Olympics, India are yet to earn a quota in the second successive day.

Chain Singh finished with a score of 623.9 in the 50m Rifle Prone event, while Sanjay Rajput stood at a disappointing 48th place with a total score of 620.0. The trio of Chain Singh, Sanjay Rajput and Gagan Narang occupied 15th position with a combined score of 1856.1.

Tejaswini Sawant stood 28th with a score of 617.4 in the women's 50m Rifle Prone event, which was the best position anyone achieved from India. In the same event, Anjum Moudgil finished 33rd after scoring 616.5, while Shreya Saksena took up 54th position with a score of 609.9. overall the women's team finished with a score of 1848.1.

In the women's junior 10m air pistol, Abhidnya Patil finished 13th, after scoring 568. Combined with Saurabh Chaudhary, the duo clinched the bronze for 10m air pistol mixed event on Tuesday.

Anjum Moudgil and Apurvi Chandela have already secured a quota for the Tokyo Olympics after finishing with a silver and standing fourth in the women's 10m air rifle event. However, the final selection decision would lie with the National Rifle Association of India, who would be considering the aggregate scores in order to come to a conclusion.
