Ramkumar Ramanathan ended his US Open qualifying campaign with a disappointing loss in the first round itself to Filippo Baldi of Italy, ranked 145. Meanwhile, Ankita Raina pulled off a stunning win in the opening round by defeating Ysaline Bonaventure of Belgium in a thrilling match.

It was a tough day at work for India's second-ranked tennis professional, Ramkumar Ramanathan, who slumped to a disappointing loss in the first qualifying round of the US Open. The Indian ace succumbed to a 7-5, 7-6 (9) to Filippo Baldi of Italy, who is ranked 145 in the world.

Sumit Nagal is the other Indian men's contestant in the draw and will play Tatsuma Ito of Japan. Meanwhile, top-ranked Indian Prajnesh Gunneswaran will be the sole Indian to have sealed his spot in the singles main draw by virtue of his ranking.

However, it was a brilliant day for Indian women's singles player - Ankita Raina - who came closer to making her first appearance in the main draw of a grand slam by defeating Ysaline Bonaventure of Belgium in an exciting encounter. Raina, who is ranked at 194 in the world rankings, registered a fighting 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 win over her Belgium opponent to Ilreach the second round of the qualifiers on Monday night. The match saw eight breaks of serve, with Raina winning five out of six break chances.
