Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire broke the records for most runs scored in a day-night 50-over match at Trent Bridge on Sunday. The Royal London Cup fixture went down to the wire as the teams amassed 870 runs with three centuries being scored, and the Notts winning by 21 runs in the end.

A new record for most runs scored in a 50-over match in England was set as Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire’s batsmen cut loose at Trent Bridge. The teams began their Royal London One-Day Cup campaigns in record-breaking fashion, amassing 870 runs. The home side, Nottinghamshire eventually emerged the winners.

Michael Lumb and Riki Wessels opened the batting for the Notts, and the pair put up a partnership of 342, the highest ever in English List A cricket. Lumb scored 184 from 150 and Wessels 146 from 97, both reaching their highest one-day scores. Once Wessels fell in the 40th over, the wickets kept tumbling reugalry. Yet, with a few useful cameos and 20 extras, the Notts posted the second highest List A total of 445/8. The highest was 496/4 by Surrey against Gloucestershire.

A shoulder injury to Richard Levi meant he did not bat until number 11, however, this did not dampen the Northants' fight as RK Kleinveldt smashed 128 of 76 balls and AM Rossington scored 97 of 96 to bring them within touching distance of the target. With 21 required off two overs, Harry Gurney kept his cool to dismiss Levi in the 49th over. Nothamptonshire ended their innings at 425 all out, leaving them 20 runs short of a win. Incredibly, 35 sixes were hit in the game, which contributed to the mammoth match aggregate of 870 runs.

Afterwards Lumb joked: "It was a bit twitchy. What a great game of cricket. Never in doubt.
