Gautam Gambhir: I’ve tried to simplify my game
India opener Gautam Gambhir has revealed the adjustments he made to his technique that saw him score a fifty on his Test return against New Zealand this month after a gap of two years. The 35-year-old veteran also said he is in good enough shape to compete with the younger lot in the team.
“I realised it was going to be tough when I went
“I tried to simplify my game. It is important when you are under pressure against quality attacks. It doesn't matter how you stand. It's about what kind of position you are in while you receive the ball,” he added.
Gambhir got a look-in for the third Test following injuries to regulars KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan, and his newly-opted stance triggered a debate. The Delhi southpaw had returned to the mix on the back of a string of good scores in the Duleep Trophy, after losing his international place in 2014.
Gambhir said the time he had spent with Justin Langer in Australia had helped.
“My endeavour was to be at peace with myself. It is important to cut off from the world at some point
“The most important thing is if I have the same energy as these guys then I deserve to be a part of this bunch. It's not about the age but whether I can compete with them.”
On being the senior-most player in the team, Gambhir said: “There's no doubt that the role has changed for me, but the goal is exactly the same which is to win each game. This team has a lot of energy which comes from passion. I would love to match their energy levels and also share my experience as well.”
Speaking about coach Anil Kumble, he said “Kumble was a good captain and the kind of man-manager he is, he welcomed me in this set-up as well. With Virat leading the team, it's very good to be around people who are very passionate.”
