Former England skipper Graham Gooch has expressed his concerns over Alastair Cook's performance, stating that there hasn't been any improvement in his game. Yesterday, Cook was removed from the crease after scoring 17 runs in the first innings against India in the Test at the Ageas Bowl.

Alastair Cook had managed to score 29 in the first innings at Trent Bridge, which was the highest he has been able to score throughout the England vs India Test series. For the last 18 innings in the Test format, he hasn't been able to reach a hundred-tally and his last successful innings was in 2017 when he scored 244 runs against Australia in Melbourne.

In August, same year, he made a double century against West Indies. However, there has been a lack of consistency in his performance. Having scored 180 for England Lions against India A, he was unable to continue the good form in the Test series between England and India.

“My concern would be watching him that I don’t see any improvements in his game. I think he’s flat-lining a little bit. When you’re a batsman, you need to improve yourself, you need to look for new things to do to drive you forward,” Gooch told BBC Radio 4.

He has maintained an average of 51.55 in the last five years. He has scored 12 out of his 20 centuries in the Test in that time period. Gooch believes that he can still improve as a player and develop his form.

“I don’t know how he’s practising and I don’t know what he’s doing away from the game, but I am concerned when I see him play. I think he makes similar mistakes, but even at 33 or 34, you can improve yourself,” he said.
