CoA members have ruled that former India cricketer WV Raman’s appointment as coach of the Indian women’s cricket team will be reviewed by BCCI ombudsman and Ethics Officer D K Jain. The 53-year old replaced Ramesh Powar as the team’s coach after the whole Mithali Raj controversy.

The appointment of former India Test cricketer WV Raman as the Indian women’s cricket team head coach came under controversial circumstances. As a consequence of which, Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) will be reviewed by BCCI Ombudsman and Ethics Officer D K Jain in a meeting on Saturday.

The former Indian opener was appointed in December following a selection process conducted by an ad-hoc panel comprising former captain Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy.

“We have referred the matter to the Ombudsman and it will be his call whether the appointment will need to be reviewed or not,” a BCCI official told PTI sources after the conclusion of a meeting in New Delhi.

The two-member CoA association headed by chairman Vinod Rai and Diana Edulji were strongly divided on the coach selection process. Rai had supported Raman’s appointment while Edulji called the entire process a “sham and unconstitutional”. Now, four months down the line, the matter has been referred to the Ombudsman.

Under the tutelage of the 53-year old former batsman, the Indian senior team have enjoyed a mix run of results on the international stage. Mithali Raj & co. defeated New Zealand and reigning World Cup champions England in the ICC ODI Championship. However, in the T20 format, the Indians were comfortably beaten by a 0-3 scoreline against the same opponents.

Former coach Powar’s controversial tenure as chief coach ended on November 30 after he had a bitter fallout with ODI captain and senior Indian player Mithali Raj over selection issues during the World T20 in the West Indies.
