My father sold milk to see me play, reveals Priyam Garg
Priyam Garg, the new India U-19 captain who hails from Meerut district in Uttar Pradesh, recalls his father’s hard work and sacrifice to see him play cricket. India are currently the defending champions of the tournament and the UP batter has been given an opportunity to take forward the legacy.
On Monday, the squad for the U-19 world cup was announced which will start from January next year in South Africa. With no surprise to anyone, UP batsman Priyam Garg has been appointed as the captain that will fly for the all-important tournament. Priyam has an outstanding first-class record with an average of 66 and it speaks volume of his potential.
Remembering his early cricketing days, he said about his father who used to sell milk from door to door and work all day just to ensure Priyam’s game is not affected due to monetary issues. He recalls that his father worked as wage labour and drove school vans just to earn some extra money for his family.
“My father did most of the hard work, he did all the odd jobs that you can imagine… selling milk, driving school vans, loading goods, he ensured that I got a good life. He went through all that just to see me become a cricketer one day. He took me to Meerut and made sure that I got into a decent academy,” Garg told The Indian Express.
He was very impressive from his U-14 days and he went on to get into UP Ranji team two years back from when the selectors had an eye on him for the U-19 world cup.
