Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting has shared the franchise’s major focal point for this year’s and it’s going to be the fast bowlers, especially the overseas ones. Ponting has hinted a few very popular names in this regard and it includes the likes of Pat Cummins and Chris Woakes.

As the celebrated IPL auction, for the thirteenth season, is back, the Delhi-based franchise are seemed to have shortlisted all their major needs or the big holes to fill ahead of the 2020 edition. Head coach Ponting has clarified that the team will have their eyes set on roping in overseas fast bowlers in the auctions, that is scheduled to be held on December 19 in Kolkata.

Ponting met the members of the team management of the Delhi Capitals to discuss their potentials targets for IPL 13. Delhi, who have 27.85 crores to spend and 11 available slots to be filled, will focus on getting a big gun in the form a fast bowler and according to Ponting, the franchise has their eyes set on Australia’s Pat Cummins and England’s Chris Woakes.

“There’s going to be a lot of focus and attention on fast bowlers, overseas ones in particular. Pat Cummins could go for big money, as could Chris Woakes. All-rounders are always interesting in my opinion,”  Ponting was quoted as saying by Sportstar.

The team also needs quality all-rounders and Ponting has named his favourites for that role.

“Players like Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Marsh, Jimmy Neesham, Colin de Grandhomme could all be big picks,” he revealed.

Ponting spoke about the need to find out the missing links in the squad first as that helps, more than anything else, in recognizing the players that will fill the gaps.

“For instance, we’ve got three openers, so we don’t need to look for one. You need to identify the problem areas in your starting eleven, and essentially plug the gaps,” he shared.

“Going into the auction you have to be very specific about the kind of players you need.”

According to the head coach, the management has had several discussion over the past few months and have tried to be prepared ahead of the “unpredictable” auctions.

“We’ve had several discussions over the last few months, and have put in a lot of time and effort to make sure that we’re well prepared. You can do all the planning in the world, but at the auction table, the unpredictable always happens,”  the former Australian captain said.
