ICC World Cup 2019 | Daniel Vettori confident of New Zealand's ability to lift World Cup
Daniel Vettori believes the Kiwis have enough class and composure to bounce back from their successive defeats and walk into the semifinals with the belief that they can win the World Cup. However, Vettori added that Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor have to step up in support of Kane Williamson.
Former skipper Vettori firmly believes that despite the two-match blip in form, the Blackcaps will bounce back against hosts England to sail through comfortably to the semifinals. He is confident that the current squad can script history on English soil.
“I still definitely feel that this New Zealand side can make history and win it all. Two losses at this stage will be tough to take but they have been so good for so long and have so many experienced players that I am sure they will pull through,” Vettori wrote in a column on ICC media zone.
Despite the losses, New Zealand have been consistent performers. They have relied heavily on their captain Kane Williamson on the batting front, with the others chipping in. Williamson has made over 450 runs so far in the tournament while Trent Boult leads the bowling attack with 13 wickets. However, Vettori believes it is too early to write off their other experienced players like Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor.
“Guys like Ross Taylor and Martin Guptill have been too good for too long to be overlooked like that. Taylor in particular cannot be ignored, he is a fantastic player and his record has been amazing for an extended period of time now. These are too high-quality batsmen, two consistent and proven performers who they can rely on. Along with Kane, those three are the key for the game against New Zealand and the rest of the batsmen need to be complementary pieces,” Vettori added.
Against England, on Wednesday, the Kiwis will need a win to ensure their semifinal spot. However, even without a win, they can still go through with their high net run rate. Vettori said the key lies in building partnerships with both bat and ball.
