Kane Williamson has suffered a grade one tear to his left pectoral muscle while fielding in the second Test against Bangladesh and might miss the first part of the IPL. Gary Stead has stated that the team would take a “safety first” approach, particularly with this year’s World Cup on the horizon.

The New Zealand skipper, while fielding on Day 3 against Bangladesh, fell awkwardly while trying to stop a ball at gully and instantly went out of the ground. He came out to bat late on Day 3 and continued batting on Day 4, staying at the crease for nearly three hours for his 74, but he was hampered by his left shoulder and the physio had to attend him a couple of times during the game.

Later, a scan revealed that he had suffered a grade one tear to his left pectoral muscle and that put doubts on his participation in the IPL. New Zealand coach Gary Stead’s comments came as a revealing one in that regard, as he indirectly stated that they wouldn’t risk their most important batsman in the team ahead of the World Cup.

"Kane is obviously keen to play this final game, but we'll look to take a safety-first approach, particularly with the World Cup on the horizon," said Stead. We’re hopeful that he will recover quickly, and the thing for us is to make sure he doesn’t aggravate it any more. He will come to Christchurch and we will make an assessment there on whether he plays.”

Last year, Williamson was very inspiring in the Sunrisers Hyderabad set-up and in the absence of David had led the team to the final of the IPL and even topped the run charts with 735 runs, averaging 52.50, with eight fifties. The Hyderabad-based franchise will wish Williamson to get back to the past form quickly considering the fact that they have already lost Shikhar Dhawan to Delhi Capitals in the trading window.
