South Australia’s Cameron Valente flew to his left to take a one-handed stunner to dismiss a well-set Peter Handscomb in their Marsh One-Day Cup encounter against Victoria. Despite Handscomb’s 75-ball 87 and Aaron Finch’s 119, Victoria failed to chase down 322, losing the thriller by one run.

Victoria got off to the worst possible start for a big chase, losing two early wickets in the first five overs with just 16 runs on the board. But then, their skipper Handscomb joined the in-form Finch and put together a brisk 147-run partnership that seemed to be taking the match beyond the home team’s grasp.

Just then, on the penultimate ball of Kane Richardson’s seventh over, Handscomb struck a short ball outside in the air and seemingly wide of the fielder at mid-off. Although a loud cry of ‘catch’ followed, quite nobody expected Valente to run three steps to his weaker left side and pluck the ball clean out of the air from behind him, while in the air.

Though his own bowling — ten wicketless overs for 87 runs — had much less to be desired about, he returned in the final over of the innings, with Victoria needing 12 to win, and held his nerve to hand South Australia a one-run win.
