Ishant Sharma revealed that teammate KL Rahul had told him that he’d jump off a balcony if the former scored a century in the Test against Windies in Jamaica last year. Ishant, in that Test, ended up posting his highest Test score, scoring an immaculate 57 batting alongside newcomer Hanuma Vihari.

Often known as a courageous tail-ender who can graft his way out of trouble, Ishant Sharma showcased the glamorous side of his batting versus the Windies last year, an avatar that had never been seen in international cricket, up until that Test. In what was an outrageous knock, Ishant hit seven boundaries en route to a fine 57 and, alongside Hanuma Vihari, crushed Windies’ hopes with some outrageous hitting.

The pacer, who scored his first and only Test fifty in that game, in a chat with Mayank Agarwal, revealed a funny incident where teammate KL Rahul had joked that he’d jump off a balcony if Ishant scored a ton in the match. Agarwal further joked how Rahul dreaded the moment Ishant passed his own score, as he feared the Indian pacer would be in his ears for the rest of the game.

“Forget everyone’s reaction. Ask KL, how he felt about me scoring a fifty. He said ‘we were thinking if he scores a hundred, we would have to jump off from the balcony’,” Ishant told Mayank in a video interaction in the BCCI website, reported Hindustan Times.

“KL had given you some challenge, to pass his score. As soon as you passed his score, KL was like ‘aaj Ishi bhai bohot sunaega’,” Mayank replied.

Ishant further shed light on another funny interaction with Rahul, who was irked by Ishant giving him ‘advice’ after having scored a fifty.

“KL scored some 25-26 runs (he had actually scored 13 runs) and he said ‘son, if you score more than me, I will do this and that for you’. After I scored a half century, I gave him some batting advice and he was like ‘Stop it bro, you scored fifty and ab meri jaan kha raha hai (and now you are teasing me).

“My batting gloves got wet for the 1st time. Rahul gave me a pair of new gloves with which I batted in that innings. He was like ‘I should have batted with these gloves and then I could also have scored a fifty’,” Ishant recalled.

Ishant’s fifty aside, the game also saw Cheteshwar Pujara perish after miscuing an uncharacteristic uppish cut-shot off Rahkeem Cornwall. The pacer said that post the dismissal, he saw Pujara angry and livid for the first time. Ishant further stated that Pujara told him that reckless shot selection on a green wicket was what triggered his anger.

“I saw Pujara angry for the first time. He hammered a cut which went straight into the hands of the fielder at point. I asked Pujara ‘I saw you angry for the first time’. ‘What do I do yaar, I tried to hit a spinner for a big shot on the green wicket and it went for a catch’, Ishant concluded.
