Mohammed Siraj put in a new ball masterclass to end with four wickets in GT's thrashing of SRH in Hyderabad on Sunday

Sunrisers Hyderabad's batting woes continued at their home stadium on Sunday as the hosts only managed a paltry 152/8 courtesy of yet another top-order collapse triggered by Mohammed Siraj. A Shubman Gill fifty and a rapid 49 from Washington Sundar in response meant GT sealed the deal in 16.4 overs.

Brief score: GT 153/3 (16.2) [Gill 61(43)*, Sundar 49(29); Shami 2/28(4)] defeat SRH 152/8 (20) [Reddy 31(34), Klaasen 27(19); Siraj 4/17(4)] by seven wickets

Asked to bat first, Sunrisers Hyderabad's search for consistency up the order continued as Travis Head made way in the first over itself before Abhishek Sharma followed suit in the powerplay after an uncharacteristic 16-ball 18 to leave the score reading a timid 45/2 at the end of six overs. With the pitch showing hints of two pace and the ball gripping on the surface, even Ishan Kishan struggled for fluency and departed soon after the fielding restrictions were lifted to further dent the score to 50/3. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Heinric Klaasen found themselves at familiar cross roads as another collapse loomed, but the duo went against their nature and the team's trademark by excercising caution early and building their way to a half-century stand of 39 balls, of which Klaasen contributed 29 runs in 17 deliveries. Once the Proteas had his stumps disturbed by Sai Kishore, Reddy took the onus to boost the scoring rate but also succumbed to the left-arm spinner, hos 34-ball 31 leaving the team reeling at 105/5 after 15.1 overs. A stellar display of death bowling thereon from Mohammed Siraj (4/17) and Prasidh Krishna (2/15) killed off any hopes of SRH reaching a par total, even as Pat Cummins played a skipper's cameo with 22 runs in nine balls to set a target of 153.

Nevertheless, the hosts ensured they gained a foothold in the match immediately during the chase through an exhibition of noew-ball bowling by Mohammed Shami and Cummins, that culminated in the wickets of Sai Sudharsan as well as Jos Buttler within the first four overs with the score 16/2. Washington Sundar thus found himself out in the crease for the first time in the season in a high-pressure situation, as another wicket potentially spelled a fatal collapse. However, the Tamil Nadu batter remained unfettered as he struck two boundaries and as many maximums in the final over of the powerplay to help the team recover to 48/2 at the end of fielding restrictions, with Shubman Gill also going well at the other end. There was no looking back for the duo thereafter, as they kept rotating the strike and finding the occassional boundary as the captain brought up a 36-ball half-century. By the time Sundar departed one short of his own landmark after spending 29 balls at the crease, the equation read a straightforward 47 required in 41 balls. Sherfane Rutherford walked in next and was in no mood to play it out as he struck five boundaries in the next 11 balls to eventually end unbeaten on 35 off 16 while Gill scored the winning runs with 20 balls to spare.
