Indian rower Sayali Shelake, who was hospitalised on Friday to undergo an operation for intestinal blockage, has been suggested to stay back in Palembang for a week in order to complete the postoperative phase. However, Shelake has been recovering at a good rate and is out of danger.

Shelake had competed in the final of the women’s double sculls alongside partner Pooja Sangwan at the Asian Games in Palembang, Indonesia. They both had finished sixth. After which, the Indian rowing contingent departed for Pune on Friday after winning three medals, including a gold in men’s quadruple sculls. However, the 21-year-old was rushed to the hospital after she complained of constant pain in the abdomen area.

Speaking about Shelake’s issue, India’s deputy chef de mission BS Kushwaha said there is nothing to worry about at the moment as she had been operated immediately. He further said the rower will be staying back for a few days and two officials will be there with her throughout.

“She was not being able to eat anything and was in a lot of pain. However, she is out of danger now. She got operated in the nick of time else it could have been worse. Instead of two days, she will be here for seven days. Two officials will be with her all the times. There is nothing to worry now,” Kushwaha said.
