Olympian Anju Bobby George on Wednesday resigned as the President of Sports Council of Kerala after she locked horns with Sports Minister EP Jayarajan. Announcing her decision to quit, the 39-year-old said it was not proper to continue in the post after “allegations” was raised against her.

The controversy surrounding Kerala Sports Council came to the forefront earlier this month after Kerala Sports Minister E.P. Jayarajan apparently gave the athlete a dressing down about the state of affairs at the Kerala Sports Council, where Anju is at the helm. Anju, who had been appointed to the post by the previous Congress Government under Oommen Chandy, was taken to task by Jayarajan about the widespread corruption that has happened at the Council.

Anju had, in turn, retaliated taking to the media about how she was insulted by the Sports Minister. The athlete then sent an open letter to the Minister and the sports administration of the state asking for an inquiry into the state of affairs at the body over the past ten years.

The celebrated long-jumper announced her decision to resign on Wednesday at the executive meeting of the Council. Other committee members of the council have also offered to resign, said a report in India Today.

"I've decided to resign from the post of president of Sports Council of Kerala. I can't stand humiliation. I've worked to the best of my ability to improve facilities for the development of sports in Kerala and nurture talents," Anju told India Today.

The 39-year-old alleged that those who did not like her decision to form an ethics commission to look into the corruption cases in the council were behind the false allegations against her.

“I do not think the allegations had occurred due to any issue from the side of government or the Council. Those who fear the proposed ethics commission are the ones who are behind all this,” she said without naming anybody, reported PTI.

“As a revenue official and an athlete, who participated in a number of international competitions, I could easily find out many malpractices in the Sports Council, when I took charge. I think the problems began there,” she alleged.

“Even my e-mail ID was hacked. In such circumstances me and my council members decided to form an ethics commission to expose the corruption, harassment and other illegal dealings there,” the 39-year-old said.
