Cricket Australia blames “clerical error” after wrongly announcing themselves as No.1 T20I team

Cricket Australia has clarified that Pakistan still top the T20 world rankings, after wrongly announcing them as the World No.1 after the tri-series victory. In a statement, CA said a "clerical error" by the ICC meant the calculation was wrong and Pakistan still retain the number one ranking.

Rain in Auckland during the final of Trans-Tasman series ended the tri-series in slightly anti-climactic fashion but, a rejuvenated Australia declared the winner as per the DLS method. Coming to the tournament ranking a lowly No.7 and without their Test stars apart from David Warner, Australia were unfancied to be the winners. But they were assured of the No. 1 spot by the International Cricket Council and the motivation stung together to do the improbable. However, as it turned out, it was a clerical error.

Cricket Australia, on Thursday, confirmed that they were given the wrong calculation by the governing body of the game and it was mentioned that if they could win the final and go through the tournament unbeaten they would finally earn the No 1 position.

"But the ICC clarified that this initial calculation was a clerical error and it is in fact, Pakistan who have retained top spot on decimal points," Cricket Australia said, reported News 18.

On proper calculation, it was clear that after winning the tournament, Australia were left with 125.65 points, an agonising 0.19 behind Pakistan on 125.84. Therefore Pakistan still top the table of the T20 rankings and Australia remain one of three current Test-playing nations, along with Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, to have not held the No1 ranking in T20 cricket ever.
