Virat Kohli to have no say in Indian coach’s selection
A BCCI official has confirmed that Indian skipper Virat Kohli will not have a say in the selection of India’s new coach. The BCCI recently invited fresh applications for the coach’s and the tenure for the same will be for two years and the staff will take over after the Windies series.
As per reports, the final call over picking the new coach will be taken by the steering committee headed by former Indian captain Kapil Dev and will be approved by Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA). The BCCI official confirmed that Kohli will not have any role to play in coach’s selection this time and the coach selection committee has Kapil Dev, who will pay no heed to what Kohli has to say.
“Last time, the captain (Kohli) had expressed his difficulty, or the team’s difficulty, with former coach Anil Kumble. In the new selection process, he will have absolutely no say with regards to who becomes the coach. This time, we have Kapil Dev in the coach selection committee, and he will not listen to him (Kohli),” the official said, reported the Indian Express.
It is also believed that the new coach will have no role to play in picking the support staff and the selection committee will take care of it.
“Support staff will be picked by the selection committee. Normally, we allow the head coach to do that (pick the support staff) for team building. This time, if the head coach is selected (before the selection of the support staff), he might join the process,” the official said.
Coach selection is expected to be finalised before the start of the South African series at home and it will be interesting to see who gets the nod. The application for the said position will be accepted by the BCCI till 5 pm on July 30.
