Confederations Cup | Chile and Germany share the spoils

World champions Germany and South American champions Chile played out a 1-1 draw at the Confederations Cup at Kazan Arena in Russia. Chile took the lead through Alexis Sanchez's record-breaking goal early in the first half but Germany earned a point through Lars Stindl’s finish in the 41st minute.

Sanchez wrote his name into the history books as his strike made him Chile's leading goal scorer. The Arsenal man claimed his 38th international goal in the seventh minute to eclipse the record set by Marcelo Salas, reaching the milestone on his 112th cap.

However, the 28-year old had his Arsenal teammate Shkodran Mustafi to thank as his dreadful pass out of defence was deflected by Arturo Vidal into Sanchez’s path. But after that, Sanchez showcased his class as he played a smart one-two with Vidal before galloping into the area and firing a left-footed shot beyond goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.

Mustafi on the other hand, was lucky to escape a red card for a horrendous one-footed lunge at Vidal after he had placed Sanchez in on goal. Despite being put under consistent pressure following the goal, the world champions drew level in the 41st minute with a wonderful team goal that was finished by Stindl.

Emre Can picked out full-back Jonas Hector with a brilliant pass, before Stindl arrived to stab home the squared ball from close range, for his second international goal. Though both the sides gave their all in the second half in search for a winner, it wasn’t meant to be.

The result means both sides need only a point from their last remaining Group B fixtures to progress into the semifinals.
