Afridi seeks “forgiveness” from countrymen after dismal World T20
A day after coach Waqar Younis issued a public apology, Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi followed suit by seeking forgiveness from the people of Pakistan for the team’s dismal showing in the World T20. Afridi, currently in Dubai, is likely to be sacked as captain after his return to the country.
After winning only one game in the Super 10 stage, Pakistan had bowed out of the ongoing World T20 in India, last Friday. Pakistan also lost their high-voltage clash, against arch-rivals India in the tournament and after their return to the country, coach Waqar Younis offered to step down taking responsibility for the side’s dismissal performance. Taking the lead of the coach, skipper Shahid Afridi has also sought forgiveness from the fans, for the team’s poor outing at the World T20.
In a brief video message posted on his official Twitter page, Afridi said, “I don’t care what other people say about me but I am answerable to you (people of Pakistan). Today, I, Shahid Afridi, seek forgiveness from the people of Pakistan for not living up to the expectations that you had from this team and me.
“For 20 years I have played this game and I have carried the star on my chest for 20 years. I enter the field with the emotions of the whole country with me. This team was not just a team of 11, it was a team of my whole country,” he said.

The all-rounder, who is currently in Dubai, is likely to be sacked as captain by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after his return to the country. Afridi is also expected to announce his decision on his cricketing
The 36-year old’s stay in India during the World T20 had been full of controversies. First, he drew flak in Pakistan for stating that he and Pakistan cricket team are more loved in India than in their motherland. He again caught up in another controversy, when he thanked the people of Kashmir for cheering his team in Mohali. The statement was criticized by the BCCI General Secretary Anurag Thakur, who went on to say that cricketers should avoid making political statements.
