IPL 2016 | Sachin Baby’s tears evoke memories of Vinod Kambli
Tears rolling down Vinod Kambli’s cheeks after Sri Lanka beat India in the 1996 World Cup semi-final is still the lasting image of the World Cup. Similarly, Sachin Baby’s emotional outpour during the IPL final last night was the memorable moment from the night, and the season, as RCB lost to SRH.
Chasing 209, Royal Challengers Bangalore looked on course for their maiden IPL title after Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli formed an 114-run opening partnership. With 95 runs needed off 57 balls and nine wickets in hand, the Bengaluru side looked set for an easy stroll to victory before Sunrisers Hyderabad bowlers rose to the occasion to restrict the hosts. Having seen the hopes of an IPL title disappear, Sachin Baby failed to control his emotions and cried inconsolably in the last over of the match.
The Keralite had almost gave the RCB faithful the hopes of a win after smashing Mustafizur Rahman for a six on the last ball of the penultimate over. Before the last over, the crowd sang the famous “Sachin, Sachin” chant, not for Tendulkar, but for Baby to take them to the title. But, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s inch perfect Yorkers gave the batsman no room to hit them to the ropes, and after the fifth ball of the match, the batsman sunk to his knees seeing the inevitable defeat in front of him. Baby was distraught, crying incessantly as the SRH players celebrated their maiden title win.

The left hander’s emotions were reminiscent of the image of Vinod Kambli crying after India’s semi-final defeat against Sri Lanka in the 1996 World Cup. "I cried because I thought I was robbed of a chance to do it for my country. The entire team hugged me. Most of us were crying. It was not only Tendulkar and other cricketers' dream to win the Cup but mine too. Tears roll down my cheek even today," Kambli had said years after the incident.
Hopefully Sachin Baby can overcome the pain and disappointment of the final defeat, and lead RCB to many title wins in coming seasons.
