Indian skipper Virat Kohli has moved one place up in the ICC Test rankings to reach the 14th spot while first match centurion Cheteshwar Pujara has climbed a place to reach 11th rank. Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has remained at the No.1 spot for bowlers despite his minor slump in the first Test.

Virat Kohli scored 40 runs in the first innings and followed that up with a match-saving 49* in the second innings of the first Test match against England, which helped him rise in the ICC Test rankings to reach 14th position. The current world No.2 in One-Day cricket has struggled to transfer his limited-over consistency to the purest form of cricket so far, but played a short-but-sensible innings to save India from the ignominy of losing the game at Rajkot.

Similarly, Cheteshwar Pujara moved one place up in the rankings table to reach the 11th position. Pujara made a well-crafted 124 runs in the first innings, partnering Murali Vijay, who also scored a gritty 126 runs. Vijay’s seventh Test ton helped him to rise two places up to reach the 23rd position.

However, twin failures for Ajinkya Rahane in the first Test resulted in him dropping four places to reach ninth position in the rankings. The current best Test batsman in the Indian side, Rahane, could manage to score only 13 and 1 in two innings in Rajkot.

Englishman Joe Root, after mustering a brilliant 124 in the first Test, overtook Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson to reach the second position. Leading by 42 points, Australian skipper Steve Smith is still at the top of the rankings.

On the other hand, young debutant opener of England Haseeb Hameed made an impressive entry to the list as No.64 after scoring 31 and 82 at Rajkot.

In the bowlers' category, Ravichandran Ashwin remains the No.1 bowler despite picking only two wickets conceding 230 runs in the first Test. After picking up 13 wickets in the second Test against Zimbabwe, Sri Lankan veteran spinner and stand-in captain Rangana Herath has reached his career best 2nd position.
