After leading India for nine trophy-laden years, Mahendra Singh Dhoni finally called time on India's limited-overs captaincy career and we cannot be thankful enough to the Captain Cool. Taking up the reins during the most difficult phase of Indian cricket, in September 2007, Dhoni transformed the Indian team into a formidable outfit of world beaters. Not only did the Jharkhand Dynamite lead India to stupendous victories, he also ensured that Indian cricket goes through a smooth transition when his time as captain is up.

The achievements of MS Dhoni as India's limited-overs captain are unparalleled as he remains the only captain to win all the three ICC major trophies. During his tenure as the skipper of the Indian side, Dhoni added honors at will to his overflowing Trophy cabinet.

Here, we look at the awards and accolades won by MS Dhoni until now.

An international career that started with a duck, more often than not, would force Indians to sign off a player from the onset. However, the perception had undergone a change with Sachin Tendulkar. Dhoni followed that with supreme authority in the 21st century. Out for a duck in the first match as an international player, Dhoni went on to etch his name in the annals of Indian cricket history as one of the most celebrated cricketers of all-time. In the process, Dhoni also went on to be bestowed with many achievements and accolades.

2006- Dhoni was chosen in the ICC One-day team of the year 2006 for scoring 1170 runs from 36 matches during the cut-off period for the year, which was a feat hitherto unconquered by an Indian wicket keeper. It was the first major achievement by Dhoni in his cricket career.

In the same year, Dhoni was also awarded the MTV Youth Icon Award and joined industrialist Anil Ambani, actor Shahrukh Khan and former skipper Rahul Dravid in the awards lists.

2007- It was the year of unpunctuated success for young MS Dhoni. Leading India for the first time, Dhoni showed his calm under pressure to bring home the inaugural T20 World Cup, which was not perceived as a serious affair by most nations, including India. Dhoni became India’s new found 'Hercules'.

For his success as a skipper to win a World Cup after 24 years, Dhoni was selected for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, the country's highest honour for a sportsperson. With that, Dhoni had become the second cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar to receive the prestigious award.

2008- Dhoni was adjudged as the ICC One-day Cricketer of the year award by beating the other nominees Sachin Tendulkar, former Aussie pacer Nathan Bracken and former Pakistani batsman Mohammed Yousuf.

Dhoni had also broken into the ICC One-day Team as the wicket-keeper.

2009- In this year, Dhoni led India to the numero Uno position in Test Cricket and had a pretty good year as a batsman. Undoubtedly, he was selected as the ICC One-day Cricketer of the year award for the second consecutive time and was also selected as the skipper of ICC World One-day XI. Just within a year of taking over the Test captaincy, Dhoni was also selected to lead the ICC Test XI of the year.

Padmashri award was also bestowed upon MS Dhoni.

2010- India had retained the No.1 position in ICC Test rankings for a healthy period of 2010 and Dhoni was again selected as the skipper of ICC Test team of the year. Dhoni also found a spot in the ICC One-day team of the year as a wicket-keeper batsman.

2011- It was truly the most memorable year for Dhoni and all Indian fans alike. India had won an ICC World Cup after 28 years by defeating Sri Lanka in the finals. It was the year that defined the legacy of MS Dhoni.

For the World Cup triumph, Dhoni was chosen as the skipper of ICC World one-day XI and also won the ICC Spirit of Cricket award.

In the same year, Dhoni received an honorary doctorate from De Montfort University in Leicestershire.

He was also chosen as the CNN-IBN Indian Sportsperson of the year.
