A hat-trick has always been considered as the crowning jewel in a bowler’s individual career and is an event that is always associated with a cricketer throughout his career. Sri Lanka’s Wanidu Hasaranga de Silva became only the third bowler in the ODI history to pick up the coveted treble on debut.

The leg-spinning all-rounder, who is considered as the best fielder in the Sri Lanka side, was primarily picked in the team due to the team's poor fielding standards that were exposed in the Champions Trophy exit to Pakistan. But de Silva had more than that on his mind when he was handed the debut cap in front of his home crowd in Galle as he became only the fifth Sri Lankan after Chaminda Vaas, Lasith Malinga, Farveez Maharoof, and Thisara Perera to claim a hat-trick in ODIs.

De Silva started the carnage by bringing the curtains down on Malcolm Waller's aggressive knock of 38 runs when the latter dragged the second ball of the 33rd over onto his leg stump. With the score at 155/8, Donald Tiripano came out to bat but he suffered the same fate albeit in a different fashion. The 29-year-old failed to pick up the googly and was caught plumb in front of the stumps.

It was the wrong ‘un, again, that secured the hat trick for the Sri Lankan teenager. Tendai Chatara was on the receiving end of the de Silva masterclass as the 19-year-old was sent packing with the scoreboard reflecting just 155 runs on the board. The teenager, who replaced Lahiru Madushanka in the squad, finished with figures of 3/15 in 2.4 overs.

The hat-trick helped de Silva become only the third player in the ODI history - after Bangladesh’s Taijul Islam and South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada - to claim a hat-trick on debut.
