Tamil Nadu cricketer Vijay Shankar has revealed that the frequency of injuries he has incurred in the past few months has taken a toll on him mentally. The 27-year-old is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru after sustaining a tendon injury.

Shankar's stint with the India A side was cut short after he sustained a left hamstring tendon injury during the second four-day match against West Indies A in England last month, which ruled him out of the upcoming quadrangular series scheduled to begin in Vijayawada from Friday. He was selected in the India B squad for the series against India A, Australia A, and South Africa A.

After a decent IPL season with Delhi Daredevils, Shankar has been entrenched in frequent injuries, especially for his India A commitments, with the player revealing that it has taken a toll on him mentally. He also revealed that it was the first time he had sustained a muscle-related injury.

“I am getting injured mostly during India A commitments and the frequency of it is affecting me mentally. This is the first time I am having a muscle-related injury. I slipped while bowling and injured my left hamstring tendon,” Shankar told Times of India on Sunday.

The Tamil Nadu limited-overs skipper further said that he does not have much clarity on when he can return to action. However, he expressed his eagerness to play the quadrangular series.

“To be honest, I was really hoping to play in the quadrangular series and maybe even the four-day matches against Australia A. Unfortunately, I do not know how long it will take me to recover properly,” Shankar added.

Shankar concluded by stating that the doctor, who had done his knee surgery in Mumbai, has suggested him to take more rest as the injury had to be monitored weekly.

“Recently, I went and visited my doctor (surgeon) in Mumbai along with NCA physio Ashish Kaushik. He said that the injury will take some more time and it needs to be monitored every week,” he concluded.
