Former ICC Chairman N Srinivasan has claimed that the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) has grown over the past few years developing into a well-renowned tournament. He also added that the local league has created great a lot of awareness for cricket, particularly in the rural regions of the state.

The third edition of the TNPL concluded at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday night with Siechem Madurai Panthers winning their maiden title. After yet another successful season of the T20 league, Srinivasan, who watched the finals between Dindigul Dragons and Madurai Panthers, was full of praise for the local tournament and its committee.

The 75-year-old stated that the tournament (TNPL) has grown from strength to strength over the years and has created awareness for cricket in the rural regions of Tamil Nadu. He has also been of the opinion that the tournament has helped the youngsters in shaping their future as well.

“I think TNPL has gone from strength to strength over the past few years and it has created a great deal of awareness, particularly in rural Tamil Nadu. It has also paved the way for youngsters to take interest because they see TNPL as a way to go up the cricket ladder,” Srinivasan told the tournament broadcaster on the sidelines of the summit clash.

Srinivasan further praised the ground staff from Chennai and the officials as a lot of work went into making the grounds in Dindigul and Tirunelveli (hosts to a majority of games this season). It was followed by the revelation that the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) is looking forward to expanding the tournament to other cities as well.

“A few of our ground staff from Chennai had gone there and the local staff from both Dindigul and Tirunelveli have cooperated well. They did a great job and full credit to them to host a successful season. I am sure that the TNCA is looking at expanding the league to other cities such as Coimbatore and Trichy in the coming editions,” he added.

The former President of the BCCI finally stated that the management is aiming at making this tournament a bigger and stronger one so that more players get selected at the higher levels.

“Many players from the TNPL have been noticed and even gone to play in the Indian Premier League. Looking forward, our aim is to make this a stronger and bigger tournament,” he concluded.
