Steven Smith sheds light on how the past nine months have been for him after he was found guilty of turning a blind eye during the ball-tampering incident that occurred in Cape Town earlier this year. Smith and David Warner were handed 12-month bans for their respective roles in the entire fiasco.

The ‘Sandpapergate’ incident was definitely one of the major talking points of the 2018 season and will certainly live long in the minds of cricket fans all across the globe and especially in Australia. Australian trio of Steven Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were handed lengthy bans from international and domestic cricket by Cricket Australia officials after a thorough internal investigation was carried out.

Smith, who was captain of the national team during the tour of South Africa, in a recent interview with former skipper Adam Gilchrist opened up about how tough the last nine months have been for him and his family.

“I’ve had ups and downs throughout the nine months. mIn the first week or so after everything went down in South Africa that was really tough. I was in a pretty dark space. I was pretty much curled up in a ball and in tears for a lot of it. I was struggling mentally and not doing real well,” Smith said in an interview with Fox Sports which will be aired after opening day’s play on Boxing Day.

Smith, who’s represented the Aussies in 64 Test matches and scored 6199 runs in the process, thanked his close group of friends, his wife Dani Willis and manager Warren Craig who helped him bounce back from the setback.

While Warner was touted as the mastermind behind the entire incident, Smith was found to have ‘knowledge of a potential plan’ and ‘failure to take steps to seek to prevent the development and implementation of that plan’ by CA. The 29-year old admitted that he failed as a leader.

“I saw the potential for something to happen out in the middle. I didn’t particularly know that it was going to happen but at that point I said I don’t want to know about it. That was my failure of leadership,” Smith added.
