CSA confirms Imran Tahir faced racial abuse during Johannesburg ODI
Imran Tahir was at the receiving end of racial abuse during the fourth ODI between India and South Africa in Johannesburg, Cricket South Africa confirmed through a press release today. The release also added that the fan was eventually evicted from the stadium after Tahir reported the incident.
After failing to make an impact in the first three matches of the series, the hosts decided to rest Tahir for the Pink ODI in Johannesburg which forced the leg-spinner to serve drinks for the team. While he was happily doing his work on the sidelines, a fan hurled some racial words from the crowd and the top-ranked ODI bowler duly informed the team management.
"Cricket South Africa has noted and is aware of the circulation of video footage featuring Imran Tahir on social media and Whatsapp groups," CSA said in a release, reported Cricbuzz.
"Imran Tahir was verbally and racially abused by an unknown man during the fourth One-Day International (ODI) against India at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium on Saturday. Tahir reported the incident to the stadium security and was subsequently accompanied by two security personnel to identify and to have the man ejected from the stadium. Tahir made no physical contact with the offender or any of the children in the vicinity. The incident is under investigation with the CSA and stadium security teams.
"In accordance with the ICC Anti-racism code, spectators who engage in racist conduct are to be ejected from the stadium and can face further sanctions and criminal prosecution," CSA stated.
However, this is not the first time that Tahir has been facing the wrath of some racist fans. The fans at the Manuka Oval, during the 2015 World Cup, shouted at the Pakistan-born cricketer, "Why don't you go stroke your pet camel?". In South Africa’s tour to Australia before the World Cup, in 2014, Tahir had also faced a similar incident from the spectators at the same venue.
