Vinayak Samant has been appointed as the new coach of the Mumbai Senior team for the 2018-19 season. His name as a mentor was finalized by the Mumbai Cricket Association's (MCA) Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) on Thursday evening after three consecutive meetings extending to three days.

Samant’s selection as the coach of the Mumbai team has been viewed as one of the most extensive and thorough process of picking up a Mumbai coach. His name was finalized by MCA'S CIC on Thursday over three meetings approximating to at least 18 hours. Initially, former Indian batsman Pravin Amre had been considered for the position, but he withdrew because of certain interest issues.

Ramesh Pawar was further ruled out because he quit midseason as the spin bowling coach of the MCA Academy as the association didn't comply to his idea of organizing a camp for young spinners, which made him ineligible for the post of a coach as per association's norms. Samant was finally bestowed upon with this responsibility.

“I'm glad and happy, but at the same time, I know that it's a big responsibility placed on me. I'm sure that I will fulfill it with positive results. I'm hoping that my presence will benefit the players as well as the association. Let's hope for the best,” said Samant, reported TOI.

Samant had proved his efficiency as he progressed the Mumbai U-23 team to conquer the title in the 2015-16 season. He will be immediately acting as per his new designation as the selection process was already delayed by a month. On Friday, the Mumbai selectors will be conducting a selection for the Dr K Thimmappiah KSCA tournament in Bangalore. Wilkin Mota has been selected as the new Mumbai Under-19 coach.
