The Bangladesh Cricket Board has turned to the services of former England wicket-keeper Steve Rhodes, who was recently announced as the head coach of the national team. Rhodes also revealed that he hopes his experience would be of real value to a young Bangladesh team led by Shakib Al Hasan.

Bangladesh cricket team ended their recent visit to India on a disappointing note where they were crushed by a vibrant Afghanistan side, who ran riot in the three-match T20I series which the latter won 3-0. Following the whitewash, skipper Shakib Al Hasan even went on to accuse the side's poor batting for the loss in a post-match interview.

Amongst all this, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has appointed former England wicket-keeper Steve Rhodes as their new coach in place of Chandika Hathurusingha who resigned last October. Courtney Walsh, who was the bowling coach assumed the post of the interim coach ever since.

53-year old Rhodes had previously held coaching positions with Worcestershire and the England Under-19 squad but was fired from the latter after his failure to report the arrest of Alex Hepburn in time. But all that aside, Rhodes seemed highly optimistic of his new team in Bangladesh.

“Bangladesh is a wonderful cricket nation. The support that the boys get in the Bangladesh team is tremendous. Personally to be involved in a major role, to be given the responsibility by the President and Board, is a fantastic honour and it’s a privilege to be involved in Bangladesh cricket,” Rhodes told reporters in Dhaka.

Rhodes, who was a veteran of 11 Tests and nine One-Day Internationals for England, has hope that his experience and insight would be of value to the youngsters in the Bangladesh team.

“I am very lucky to be involved in some of England’s preparations which include their tour to Bangladesh in 2016. I have had a flavour of international coaching. There’s not a lot of difference in how you go about your coaching, but obviously, the international programme is quite heavy.

“Trying to keep the boys up for the game isn’t easy to do. Ultimately, I feel as though I am qualified now. You can see I have grey hair, which tends to mean you’ve gone through hard times. Hopefully, my experience will be of real value to the Bangladesh team,” Rhodes added.
