Kapil Dev latest person alleged with conflict of interest post appointment to CAC
Kapil Dev’s position as the Chairman of the Cricket Advisory Committee has come under scrutiny after it has come to light that he runs a company that provides floodlights to various stadiums. The likes of Tendulkar and Ganguly have already been stripped of their roles under the same rule.
Kapil Dev was recently appointed as the Chairman of the newly formed of the Cricket Advisory Committee. The committee is supposed to perform a wide array of administrative jobs, including appointing the support staff and the head coach of the Indian cricket team.
However, Kapil Dev is also the owner of a floodlight business whose customers include a large number of cricketing venues such as Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium, the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium located in Mohali, Gujarat Cricket Association's stadium at Motera and Orissa Cricket Association's Barabati stadium. Its website reads 'Musco Lighting Pvt Ltd is a Sports Lighting Company incorporated in 1995 by a tie-up between Kapil Dev (cricketer) & Musco Sports Lighting LLC., USA'.
This has led to allegations of a conflict of interest as per the new BCCI constitution. Earlier, the Lodha panel’s recommendation had clearly outlined the policy of ‘one person, one post,’ and the clause 38 (4) (o) of the constitution has been modelled on the same. It reads, “it is clarified that no individual may occupy more than one of the following posts at a single point in time except where prescribed under these rules: (o) Contractual entity (Broadcast, Security, Contractor etc).”
The previous CAC included veterans Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, both of whom were charged with conflict of interest because of their roles as mentors of IPL teams and other business ventures. The complaint against them had been filed by MPCA life member Sanjeev Gupta. However, the CoA has allowed Dev’s appointment to go ahead to the committee that also includes Shantha Rangaswamy and Anshuman Gaekwad.
"The Ethics officer's order with regards to VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly was quite clear that 'one person, one post' principle should be upheld at all cost. If the old CAC is now not functional because of Ethics officer's conflict of interest order, what's the point of appointing the equally conflicted Kapil Dev led committee to do the CAC's job now," a BCCI functionary was reported saying by India Today.
