Reports | Mike Hesson resigns as head coach of Kings XI Punjab
Mike Hesson, the head coach of Kings XI Punjab, confirmed on Wednesday via Twitter that he has parted ways with the Indian Premier League franchise. Even though he had signed a two-year contract, Hesson will leave the role midway, amidst strong rumours linking him to the India head coach job.
The Kings XI got off to a flying start in VIVO IPL 2018, with five wins from their first six matches. Then, as they were at the cusp of sealing a spot in the play-offs, they blew it. From their next eight matches, the Kings XI won just one. Hence, Hesson took over in October from the then head coach, Brad Hodge. He signed a two-year contract but could only guide the side to a sixth-placed finish in the 2019 edition of the IPL, now the former New Zealand coach is stepping down.
"I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Kings XI franchise and wish to thank them for the season I had in charge," Hesson tweeted on Wednesday (August 8). "Whilst disappointed not to be able to build on the work we did this year, I'm sure success isn't too far away for them. I wish them all the best for the future," Hesson tweeted, reported Cricbuzz.
Although Hesson did not state the reason behind this seemingly sudden departure, it is understood that several national teams are interested in taking him in. Hesson had an impressive stint with his home country, New Zealand, who went all the way to the 2015 World Cup final under his guidance.
If reports are to be fully believed, Hesson has submitted his application for the head coach role for the Indian men’s national team. Pakistan, England, Bangladesh, and South Africa are also among the teams for a new head coach.
