The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made it clear to Sharjeel Khan that he would have to admit his involvement in spot-fixing in order to return to professional cricket. The 29-year-old was banned from all forms of cricket for five years in August 2017 for his role in a spot-fixing scandal.

Despite having served the entirety of his suspended 30-month ban, the PCB has made it clear to Sharjeel Khan that he will not be considered for selection until and unless he admits his indulgement in the spot-fixing scandal which rocked the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in 2017. The left-hander was banned for 30 months in August 2017 for his role in the spot-fixing scandal, but it was also later announced that half his ban would remain a suspended one.

Now, after having served the ban, the opener would need to admit his role in the scandal in order to be considered for any professional cricketing action in Pakistan. According to a report by Sportstar, Sharjeel could get back into action as early as September, but would first need to take responsibility for his actions and attend an Anti-Corruption rehabilitation programme before resuming his career.

The report also states that Sharjeel’s lawyer Shaighan Ejaz had already written to the PCB regarding his client's willingness in participating in the rehabilitation programme. Ejaz also brought to notice the fact that the rehabilitation programme in itself contains a clause which says that a player can only be allowed to attend it if he is deemed to have admitted his mistake and shown remorse for his actions.

“Sharjeel wants to play cricket again and once we get an answer from the PCB, we will see where things stand,” Ejaz said.

Sharjeel has represented Pakistan in one Test and 25 ODIs, having last played for his country on January 26, 2017 in an ODI against Australia at Adelaide.
