Second major sponsor demands CSA top brass resignation
CSA faces yet another challenge as their second major sponsor Momentum demanded the resignation of top brass in order to continue its association with the body. The company has given a deadline of April 30 next year to solve the crisis on hand as Graeme Smith joins office as Acting Director.
It seems like the cricket crisis in South Africa is nowhere near its end as Cricket South Africa (CSA), which is vying to solve it as early as possible, is facing severe blows from its sponsors. While their major sponsor Standard Bank has already decided not to renew the contract with the board, their second major sponsor Momentum has come forward with a set of demands to continue its support.
Jeanette Marais, deputy chief executive of Momentum, said the company demanded the resignation of the board, alternatively the resignation of president Chris Nenzani and vice-president Beresford Williams, and an independent financial audit of CSA.
Marais said Momentum had also told CSA it wanted the appointment of a lead independent director “with relevant experience” and the appointment of an independent director with on-field cricket experience, as well as the resolving of issues between CSA and the SA Cricketers’ Association(SACA).
On the other hand, the CSA top brass which suspended chief Thabang Moroe has refused to resign even after facing immense pressure from SACA and other pundits around the country. Three independent directors have resigned as well as one non-independent director.
South Africa starts a Test series against England on December 26. Former captain Graeme Smith agreed on Wednesday to act as the Director of Cricket for a three-month period and has been given the task of overseeing preparations for the series.
