VIDEO | Umpiring mess-up resurfaces in Bangladesh as David Warner declared out despite grounding his bat first
The T20I series decider between Bangladesh and West Indies last month saw a huge umpiring blunder which led to the umpire publicly apologizing for that. That resurfaced in Bangladesh once again as David Warner was given out in a comical manner despite reaching the other end first.
Umpiring mess-up in Bangladesh is not a new thing, and what had happened last month during the Bangladesh-Windies T20I made everyone question their standard to officiate international games. While that was worrisome and needed an immediate address, another terrible umpiring blunder in the Bangladesh Premier League denied David Warner a good start to his redemption in the top-level cricket.
The incident in question took place in the fifth over of Sylhet Sixers’ innings against Comilla Victorians, as David Warner came out to open for the team. He first got a reprimand as Steve Smith couldn’t gobble up a catch at slip, but his fortune had been dictated by the third umpire Sharfuddoula in a comical manner.
The third delivery of the fifth over was a length ball on the off-stump, and Towhid Hridoy didn’t have any problems in flicking that to square leg. While Warner went for a run, Hridoy was clearly not interested on it and stayed on his crease and within a while, both the batsmen found themselves stranded at one end. Mohammed Shahid, after collecting the ball, threw it to the bowler’s end and Malik didn’t waste a second in dislodging the bails.
So it all came down to the fact who was within the crease first and who was outside at the time of dismissal. When the third umpire checked the replays, it was clear that Hridoy's bat was near the crease while Warner had reached the other end safely. While the Warner fans would have started breathing happily, thinking he was not out, they must have left surprised as Sharfuddoula asked the Aussie to return back to the pavilion. It left everyone surprised, but such is the standard of the umpiring that it makes anyone go crazy anymore.
