Some cricketers may appear unfit to even stand on a cricket pitch given their shape and size but when it’s time to perform they more often than not prove their worth in gold. This time it was Afghanistan’s Mohammad Shahzad who emulated MS Dhoni to complete a lightning-fast stumping against Ireland.

The Irish cricket team sealed their first win in the limited-overs format against Afghanistan opposition as they made their way to a narrow four-wicket win at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Uttarakhand on Tuesday. The Europeans had to thank Andrew Balbirnie (145) and George Dockrell (54) who put in exceptional knocks in the middle to chase down the target of 257 with six balls to spare. However, things could have been much different after a moment of brilliance from the Afghanistan side late in the second innings got them back into the game.

Balbirnie and Dockrell had put up a strong stand in the middle and looked to be in total control of the game before the 43rd over. But something interesting happened as Afghanistan’s Mohammed Nabi and wicket-keeper Mohammad Shahzad combined to trouble their Irish opposition.

For the last delivery of the over, Nabi bowled a flat one outside off, after he saw Dockrell advance down the crease. The batsman missed the ball which went past the inside edge of the defence and deflected off the pad making its way towards Mohammad Shahzad. Shahzad channeled his inner MS Dhoni as he displayed lightning-quick reflexes to first catch the ball and whipped off the bails before Dockrell could get back to the crease. Despite the end result, it was definitely a fine effort from Shahzad!
